A project and Client at Kowalski KKA, working with the talented Designer Richard Meir, this exclusive boutique small lot development began the design process in 2007.
Dario, the client, was insistent that the project be more traditional with a muted brown and green ‘eco’ scheme, similar to projects completed in the early 2000s and this design treatment was provided by Richard.
While the Design Director at Kowalski, Vaughn was insistent on a contemporary tropical modern design treatment, influenced by SE Asian architects, such as Soo Chan. A design intent with crisp white weatherboard floating elements and a dark charcoal base to blend into the surrounding , louvres and high level glazing for cross ventilation.
Despite adamant protests, Vaughn relied on Kowalski’s faith in his design skills and his own determined charismatic charm to bring the client on board. In a fairly recent visit to Dario’s office, Vaughn was entertained by the client’s recalling on the process where a client’s singular vision, insisted on the then groundbreaking design intent, working with Richard Meir on the facade, within his own office…the ultimate flattery?
In truth, back in 2007-2008 this was, at the time the one and only such design / facade treatment of it’s kind in S.E. QLD and would have to wait for the right economic climate to complete construction in 2015 for the design treatment to be… ‘interpretated’ by many many other projects to follow.
This is a testament, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant a project or lack of recognition, faith and determination of someone like Kris Kowalski can provide change to the architectural design language of a region.
